    COMPETITION GUIDELINES

    Eligibility:  Competition is open to any currently enrolled M.S. or Ph.D. student working on original research that investigates some aspect of southern hardwood forest research (e. g. silviculture, forest protection, forest ecology, forest products, wildlife, etc.).

    Deadline:  Submissions must be received by 5:00 pm, Friday, February 15th, 2013.  Limit of one entry per student.

    Time:  Posters must be set up in the Capps Center by 9:00 am on February 21st, 2013 and should remain up until 2:00 pm.  Display boards and mounting pins will be provided for display of posters.

    Attendance:  Students must be in attendance at the meeting and are requested to be at his/her poster to answer questions during the poster viewing time on February 21st,  from 9:45 – 10:15 am.

    Awards:  Awards will be $250 for first place, $150 for second place, and $100 for third place.  Winners will be announced at the meeting.

    Evaluation: Award winners will be selected by consensus of a panel of judges.  Evaluations will be based on presentation, content, and impact of the research.

       Each student may submit one poster.  

      After entering your name, email address, poster title, co-authors, and abstract, please also upload an electronic copy of your poster in PDF or PowerPoint format using the “Upload Poster” block below the abstract block.


      If you do not receive an email message within 48 hours indicating your poster was successfully submitted, contact Tracy Hawkins at tracyhawkins@fs.fed.us to make other arrangements for submitting your poster.

      Please also remember to bring a hard copy of your poster 
      to be displayed at the the meeting on February 21, 2013

    FORMAT:  Poster size should be no greater than 48 in x 48 in.

                Posters should include – 

                1)  Title banner with title, author(s), department and institution – entrant must be first author

                2)  Abstract – a maximum 250-word summary of the study and findings

                3)  Introduction – clear and concise statement of the rationale, objective(s), and justification for the project

                4)  Materials and Methods – the key materials and methods defining how the study was conducted

                5)  Results – may include tables, figures, photos, etc. showing and documenting experimental findings and analyses.

                6)  Conclusions and Discussion – statement and brief explanation of conclusions from the study results and their significance

                7)  Acknowledgements and References – brief acknowledgment of other contributors who are not authors, and key literature references 

    Legibility:  All text and figures should be readable from a distance of 1 meter, including captions and figure legends

    Continuity: The presentation should be a coherent series of statements and supporting illustrations, which show the progression of the study
